The Pacific Herring is a key species both ecologically and culturally along the BC coast.
We collaborated with the Heiltsuk First Nation, Simon Fraser University, the Herring School Network, Hakai Institute and coastal First Nations to produce a website for the general public, educators and decision makers to raise awareness about the importance of conserving the precious herring.
The website introduces users to the biology, history, management and traditional/commercial uses of herring. It merges traditional knowledge with scientific knowledge through the use of historical photographs, maps, and approximately 100 video interviews with stakeholders including First Nations, scientists and fishermen.
Our interactive graphics let viewers visually explore the herring life cycle, food web and human interactions.
This website is used as an educational tool in classrooms throughout the province and is incorporated into the Heiltsuk First Nation curriculum.
